Commercial solar for Newton Aycliffe and Aycliffe Business Park
If commercial solar in the North East has a natural capital, it is Aycliffe Business Park. Around 700 hectares, more than 500 businesses, roughly 10,000 people at work — the biggest single employment area in County Durham, and now reckoned the biggest business park in the whole region. Practically, that is hundreds of hectares of wide-span industrial building, most of it roofed in exactly the profiled steel sheet we prefer to install on.

The park’s history explains its shape: a wartime ordnance factory on the moors between Aycliffe and Middridge left cleared industrial land, and in April 1947 Aycliffe became the North East’s first new town — William Beveridge’s flagship; he even moved to Pease Way to live in it. The result is what a planner would draw if asked to design for rooftop solar: consolidated industrial zoning, generous plots, buildings engineered for span rather than ornament.

The occupier list reads like a manufacturing census: Hitachi Rail’s £82 million rolling-stock factory at Merchant Park — opened in September 2015 with over 700 direct jobs — alongside names like 3M, Gestamp, Ineos, Husqvarna and PWS among the park’s biggest employers. Manufacturing is the best load profile in commercial solar: machinery, compressed air and lighting draw power through the daylight hours, so generation is consumed on site at full import value rather than exported for pennies. On an Aycliffe-scale roof the arithmetic gets serious quickly — a 250 kWp array, modest for buildings here, sits in the 200,000–237,500 kWh a year band at North East yields, shallow-pitch sheet roofs at the lower end.
Systems at that scale are grid projects as much as roof projects — where being an electrical contractor first shows. Larger Aycliffe arrays mean a full G99 application to Northern Powergrid, sometimes with an export limit to agree where the network is constrained. We sequence that application at design stage, before a rail goes on the roof: a commissioned array that cannot legally export is a mistake with nowhere to hide.
And the park is still growing. Forrest Park, on the A167 beside junction 59 of the A1(M), adds 116 acres and up to 1.75 million square feet of industrial and distribution space — its enabling works included a new signalised A167 junction and the site’s own power substation. New-build is the cheapest moment in a building’s life to make it solar-ready: roof deck load allowances, DC routes, inverter rooms and board capacity cost pennies on the drawing board and thousands as a retrofit. What Durham County Council is doing
Two councils share the civic work here: Durham County Council as the unitary planning and rates authority, and Great Aycliffe Town Council at parish level. The county has skin in the park’s growth: its economic-development arm Business Durham promotes the sites, and Forrest Park’s enabling works were backed by £13 million of Local Enterprise Partnership funding.
Durham County Council is targeting a net-zero county by 2045 — an industrial estate generating on its own roofs is that target with cladding on. Practically, most rooftop arrays proceed under permitted development; we handle prior approval where a larger system needs it.

Can you handle a factory-scale array on Aycliffe Business Park?
Yes — and the honest answer is that above roughly 200 kWp the project is won or lost in the engineering, not the panel count. String design across big roof plates, inverter siting, board capacity, and the G99 application agreed before installation. That grid work is native territory for an electrical contractor — it is the part we would least want subcontracted if we were the client.

Before the roof deck is finalised. A PV-ready specification — loading allowance, cable containment, inverter room, spare board ways — costs very little at design stage and removes the two big retrofit costs: structural surprise and electrical rework. We run shifts — half our consumption is at night. Does solar still work?
It can, but we will not pretend the roof alone solves a night shift. Daytime load takes generation directly; for the rest, battery storage shifts surplus into the evening and can shave peak-rate demand on half-hourly tariffs. Whether the battery earns its capital cost depends on your profile — bring us a year of half-hourly data and the answer stops being a guess.
Who actually approves a big array connecting to the grid here?
Northern Powergrid, the distribution network operator for the North East. Commercial systems go through G99, and on constrained parts of the network approval may carry an export limit. We prepare the application, deal with the DNO's engineers and design to whatever is granted — the grid answer shapes the system rather than surprising it.
