Who we are
G Smith Electrical Contractors Ltd is an electrical contracting and solar installation company based in County Durham. The team behind it brings over 30 years of experience in electrical contracting, and has been installing solar PV for more than 15 of them — today, mostly on commercial and agricultural roofs across the North East.
The paperwork first, because it is worth checking any contractor's. The limited company was incorporated on 27 April 2018 and is registered in England as Company No. 11333493, with its registered office in Spennymoor, County Durham. That is on the public record at Companies House, and we would encourage you to look — the "30 years" is not the age of the company; it is the time the people doing the work have spent in the trade, and we would rather you knew the difference than took a rounder-sounding claim on faith.
Why an electrical contractor leads with solar
Most solar companies started in sales and hired the electricians afterwards. We came at it the other way round. Three decades of commercial electrical work — power distribution, lighting, fire alarm and security systems, data, inspection and testing — and then, over 15 years ago, solar PV arrived as a natural extension of the same trade. Because that is what a solar installation is: DC strings, protection, an inverter, a connection application, metering. Electrical contracting on a roof.
That history changes how we build. The G99 grid application to Northern Powergrid is a form we know, not a subcontracted mystery. If your distribution board needs upgrading before an array or a bank of EV chargers can go in, the same firm prices it and does it. And when the solar work is finished, the certification and testing behind it is done by people who certify electrical installations for a living.

How we work
Every job starts the same way: a survey and a straight answer. We look at the building, the roof and your consumption data, and if solar does not stack up for your site — wrong orientation, wrong load profile, a roof with better uses for the capital — we will say so and leave you with the numbers. A quote from us is itemised and carries no obligation, and nobody rings you three times a week afterwards.
The reason we can afford to work that way is the same reason most of our electrical work arrives: recommendation and repeat clients. A contractor that has kept commercial clients for decades in the same county does not do it by overselling them roof systems that underdeliver.
